Urine Marking Behavior

Information About Urine Marking Behavior
Q: Why do cats spray?
A: The primary reason cats spray is to mark their territory when they feel insecure. This could be triggered by the addition of a new pet or family member into the household, or many other things causing a decrease in your cat's confidence.

Q: Do only male cats spray?
A: No. Female and male cats both can and sometimes do spray.

Q: Can neutered male cats spray?
A: Yes, they can. Neutering a male cat when they're young can lessen the desire to spray so it's best to neuter a cat when he's young. Though neutering is a good idea, it is not a sure-fire prevention method. Changes to your cat's environment can cause a cat who's never sprayed, to begin this unwanted behavior. Un-neutered males and un-spayed females are much more likely to spray than neutered or spayed females.

Q: Is spraying the same as urinating?
A: No. Urination is a means of natural elimination. Spraying serves one purpose: marking of territory. A cat can be caught spraying if you see him with his rear end close to an object or wall, and then a slight quivering of the tail and a spraying of urine. During urination, a cat often squats, so the two behaviors are easy to differentiate.
