Kitten Care

So, you just got a new kitten! Now what?

First of all, be sure to have a vet check out the kitten and let you know when it will be old enough to be spayed or neutered. Find out if the kitten is healthy since it is possible that the kitten could have a disease, fleas, mites or some other thing that a vet can inform you about.

Next, ensure you have all of the things a growing kitty needs.
1. Litter box with fresh litter
2. Pooper scooper
2. Food appropriate for the age of the kitten
3. Fresh water that's available to the kitten 24 hours a day
4. Toys for the kitten to play with
5. Love from you
6. Attention from you
7. Optionally, you can buy a kitty bed. The kitten may or may not use it.
8. Nail trimmers
9. Cat brush

It's a great idea to get kittens used to having their claws trimmed and being brushed while they're young. If you wait to try these when the cat is older, it's more challenging to get them to cooperate.

Some other things you should get your kitten used to while they're young is being held and handled. Touch their belly. Touch their paws. Doing this will help in the future with vet visits or in many circumstances where you need to examine your cat.

Also start disciplining the cat while they're young. Snap your fingers when the kitten does something you don't approve of. If that doesn't get the cat's attention, try clapping your hands. Usually the noise is enough to startle them and distract them from what they are doing. If you are consistent with this method, the kitten will quickly learn that a snap or clap means they should stop their unwanted behavior. Again, starting this when they're young will help you out tremendously as they get older. Set good habits right away.
