Feral Cat Domesticating

Information About Feral Cat Domesticating
What is a feral cat?
The American Heritage dictionary says it means, "Existing in a wild or untamed state."

Feral cats are generally distrusting of people and will keep their distance. They are usually friendly with other cats, however.

It will take some time to build up a trust with a feral cat. If it he or she is a kitten, it will be a bit easier, but still slow. If an adult cat is truly feral, it's best to let them live outdoors.

To socialize a feral kitten, keep them in a very small room, like a bathroom, where they will come into close contact with you every time you visit. Get them used to your presence before trying to approach them. Stay in the room with them for more than a few minutes.

Once they are used to your visits, begin touching them, petting them, even if they are hissing. Of course be careful to avoid bites and scratches. A kitten can be held by the scruff of their neck to keep them controled.

After several weeks of long visits, feeding and petting, feral kittens should begin trusting you, and begin coming out of hiding when you enter the room. With consistent attention and care, a most kittens can be domesticated and socialized fairly well.
