Information About Adding A New CatIf you are adding a new cat into a household that already has one or more cats, there are some tips to follow to make the integration easier. If the new cat is a kitten, the integration is much easier than integrating an adult cat into a house with existing cats.
First of all, be sure to have the new cat examined by a veterinarian to ensure he or she isn't bringing any diseases or parasites into your home. If the new kitty does have a treatable ailment, quarantine him or her in a separate room away from your other pets. This area should be setup with a litterbox, fresh water and a comfortable place for kitty to sleep. Keep the cat quarantined until the ailment no longer exists.
So assuming the new cat is healthy, what is the best way to introduce the cat to your existing cats? One idea is to try to get the new cat and existing cat(s) to play with each other under a door. For example, if the new cat is in a bathroom with the door shut, get one of your other cats to come to the door by tempting them with a toy. This will allow the cats to hear and smell each other without really seeing each other.
After that step is successful, try opening the door a crack to let them peek at each other. Be sure to hold the door firmly so that each kitty can feel safe that the other cat cannot get to the other side of the door.
Be sure to give your existing cats lots of attention so they don't feel like the new cat is getting all of the attention. That could lead to jealousy.
Once they are comfortable with each other, let the new cat into the rest of the house and let the cats get used to each other. There may be some hissing and growling at first. This is normal. Eventually they should get used to each other and the hissing and growling should stop. They may even grow to get along so well they will groom each other and play together.
